Our members’ holiday decor featured on Photos page
When one member had her huge fir tree topple over, she offered the branches to other members for their holiday decorations. And, when another member had holly to share, she got the word out to our club. Members created holiday designs with these and the results are posted in this album. HGC’s Glow Girls decorated a door for Cleveland Botanical Garden’s GLOW2020 event
For many years our club has decorated a tree for the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s holiday show, GLOW. This year, Affiliate Clubs chose between trees, dining tables, and doors. Our HGC Glow Girls chose to adorn a door. The Cleveland Botanical Garden event opened on November 21 and runs through January 3. The botanical garden wanted the designs to focus on the world of plants – greens, flowers, fruit, herbs, etc – that are a part of our Holiday traditions. Our club created a beautiful door design for the event, and it incorporated new ideas, reused items, borrowed pieces, the efforts of the Glow Girls, and member donations. Our design name is “YOU’RE BOTANICALLY WELCOMED!” We also included a sign that says “Be Welcomed Through a Hudson Door at the HUDSON HOME & GARDEN TOUR” as a reminder that the Tour will be back!

Due to the cold weather, we can longer hold our meetings outdoors. Our November and December meetings will be free Zoom webinars covering practical ways to make your yard more inviting for wildlife and bees. Check our club Calendar for more details, the dates and the zoom links.
Make an Evergreen Wreath Workshop at November 19 meeting
Our next meeting will be held on November 19 at Field of Blooms, 10189 Mantua Center Road in Mantua. We will gather in the barn there and each be making a holiday wreath using a variety of greens hand-tied on a 14-inch wire frame. Owner Rose Standish will be demonstrating and directing our group. “Ready for Winter” workshop to be held Oct 28
There will be a Gardener-to-Gardener workshop on Wednesday, October 28, in the garden of Sue L’Hommedieu. This will be an opportunity to see a mixed garden of shrubs and perennials that is ready for winter. Come to hear what was done and why, get tips on composting and ask questions about your own garden. Covid-19 requires meeting adaptations but October meeting is a “go”
We have been working hard to adapt our club activities to stay in compliance with Covid-19 restrictions. Our summer events have been held outdoors with masks and social distancing. Our members have attended Open Gardens, New Member Gatherings, Gardener-to-Gardener workshops and our monthly meeting in September. As the weather gets colder, our options are narrowing for outdoor meetings, but we are able to hold one more.
Our October meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2020 (rain date Wednesday, October 14, 2020). We will be meeting outside and social distancing on the patio area at Highfield’s Event Center, 1940 Georgetown Road, Hudson. Please bring your own chair. Masks are encouraged. Indoor restrooms will be accessible. Arrival beginning at 6:00pm with the program beginning at 6:30pm.
Our speaker will be Derek Kuryla, landscape architect, who will share with us planning and designing of outdoor areas for four-season interest and will include a walking tour of Highfield’s gardens. Derek oversees the KGK landscape design studio. Prior to joining KGK, Derek received a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in Landscape Architecture from The Ohio State University and worked as a design professional for MKSK Studios of Columbus, Ohio.
September Plant Exchange – A New Format
Due to Covid19 restrictions still in place, our usual September Plant Exchange at Veterans Way Park has been cancelled. However, Hudson Garden Club members can still swap plants by posting plants that they have or want and making individual arrangements with another member to meet for the swap. Send an email to info at hudsongardenclub.org with what you want posted. Be sure to include your name and how you want to be contacted. We will post in the Members Area under the “Plants-Has/Wants” tab. While this service is only open to HGC members, we welcome anyone interested to join our club. September 10th meeting to be held outdoors
UPDATE: There was a limit to the number of people allowed at each session and all slots are now taken so we are no longer taking reservations for this program. Thank you.
Due to Covid restrictions, our September meeting will be a farm tour and presentation held outdoors. Please note the date is Thursday, September 10, 2020. The outing will be hald at Thaxton Garlic Farm, 2710 Ravenna Road, and will include a tour of the farm followed by a 45-minute presentation about various garlic varieties. Garlic and garlic products will be available for purchase. Plan to bring a chair (6 foot spacing) and if you want, a beverage or snack to enjoy during the presentation. Open Gardens planning begins
Plans are underway for a series of members-only Open Gardens during the summer months. Stay tuned as we line up members willing to invite fellow garden clubbers to a casual (social distanced) stroll of their garden. Details to follow in our club newsletter.
May meeting and Plant Exchange are canceled
Due to Ohio’s prohibition on group gatherings during the pandemic, our May meeting and the Spring Plant Exchange have been cancelled. We hope to start up our club activities again in September.
2020 Tour canceled due to Covid-19 risk
With the uncertainty of the COVID-19 outbreak and the need for social distancing, the Hudson Garden Club has made the decision to cancel the 2020 Hudson Home and Garden Tour. We greatly appreciate all the homeowners, hosts/hostesses, and volunteers who have spent so much time in planning and preparation for this year’s event.
The good news is that many of this year’s homeowners have already agreed to participate in the 2021 tour. We look forward to it being the best one yet!

Memorial books donated
As has been our club’s tradition from its founding, we have donated books to the Hudson Library in memory of two deceased members. Propagating Plants:How to Create New Plants for Free by Alan Toogood in memory of Dick Schultz and Secret Gardens of the Cotswolds by Victoria Summerley for Katy Considine, the daughter of members Dick and Joanne Satava.
January meeting to be held at The Red Twig
We continue to vary our monthly meeting location. On Thursday, January 16, our meeting will be at The Red Twig, a local floral design studio located at 5202 Darrow Road in Hudson. The Red Twig is next door to Standing Rock Gallery. Beginning at 6:45pm, we will socialize while enjoying a glass of wine. The program will begin at 7:00pm. The owner and floral designer Michelle Touve-Holland will present “Introducing Elements of Spring Into the Home.”
